UltraVeggie News May 2014

Welcome to the first edition of the monthly UltraVeggie news. In this column of the blog I will try to filter out some  interesting news and information related to plant powered endurance and an active lifestyle from the web. This time I will point out my  all-time favourite resources and give a little look at what is coming up on ultraveggie.com in the weeks and months ahead.

One of the monthly columns of this blog will be the UltraVeggie improvement of the month. Every calendar month I will try to implement a personal change or improvement into my life. Sharing my journey on this blog will be a great way to keep myself honest and committed. I invite you to embark on the UltraVeggie improvement of the month challenge with me. Here is the schedule of improvements for the next 3 months, so you get an idea what kind of challenges will be featured.

UltraVeggie improvements of the month:

May:

l will turn myself into a smoothie Ninja.
Smoothies are great for a light breakfast before a workout, a snack or as a nutrient rich recovery kick-starter. I have been meaning to become more creative and knowledgeable about smoothie recipes for a long time now, but always end up making the same 2-3 simple varieties. In May I will try 20 new to me recipes and feature my favorite 5 in this blog at the end of the month. If you are a smoothie Ninja already contact me to pass along your best recipes or resources for finding recipes.

June:

I will finally be more consistent about incorporating strength and stretching exercises into my routine.
I vow to strength train at least 2 times a week for a total of at least 90 min per week and stretch at least 3 times a week for a total of at least 60 min per week . Not huge numbers, but I am shooting for consistency here rather than a one time effort. This change shall be implemented permanently.

July:

I will be an UltraVeggie activist this month.
In the month of July I will take action by signing petitions, inquiring at companies and in stores about vegan friendly products and choices and generally promote a plant-based conscious lifestyle. I will take action a total of 31 times during July or on average once a day.

I would be thrilled if you joined me and shared your own improvement of the month experiences with me on Facebook and submitted some ideas for future improvements.

Another component of this community will be the UltraVeggie exchange. This is a monthly group trail run in North Vancouver, BC where  we share experiences, recipes or even samples of each others favourite home-made plant-based endurance fuels.  If there is interest we will turn it into a run with a full blown potluck in the future. You do not have to be vegan or vegetarian to join as long as you are respectful of the concept.

If you don`t want to wait that long you can run with me sooner. Come out to the North Shore Enduro on May 3rd. This it will be a Club Fat Ass run rather than UltraVeggie event.

Happy healthy May to all of you,

Marc Schmitz
